I was walking through the city one day when I received a call from my grandpa who mentioned he had a great story for my Soul Candy series about his wife, Judy. (Yes, he's very tech savvy and reads my blog!) After learning about what she's been doing for years, I was shocked that I didn't already know this about her and of course had to share in hopes of brightening your day and inspiring you to do good in the world as well. Soul Candy: Help for the Homeless
It's been insanely cold out this winter and I always provide the homeless in my area with what I can to keep them as warm as possible, but the thought of them being out in the cold on frigid days and nights never leaves my mind. I noticed my friend April shared the news that her sister Jamie Marie and her boyfriend Anthony Pierro assembled and handed out care packages to homeless individuals in freezing cold New York City earlier this year and was touched. I reached out to Anthony to find out more about his experience and he shared this touching video.
Soul Candy: The 'Unadoptable' Cat
I'm picking up the Soul Candy series again and to kick off the new year, I thought I'd tell you about a very special story that touched my life personally. I volunteer at the Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City and often find myself in the cattery cleaning cat cages and making friends with all of them as I go. Nothing makes me happier than helping at the shelter. Throughout the past few months, I took special notice to one cat in particular named Pepper who thanks to her age, spots of missing hair and cone around her neck, seemed what some would say, "unadoptable."

One of my very good friends and colleagues, Emily, experienced an interaction with two homeless people last fall that was incredibly touching. In NYC, we walk past the homeless time and time again and for some, they become invisible. Let's remember that they too, are people who are capable of love and need compassion. Next time you encounter a homeless person, acknowledge them when they speak to you. Even if you don't have a dollar to give them, let them know. Trust me, they appreciate just a simple answer. This story will touch your heart.

Your stories keep pouring in and I feel grateful to be able to share good news and random acts of kindness with all of you. This one was written by a woman who regularly adopts senior dogs in order to give them a wonderful last few years and will make you want to run to the nearest shelter to help!
