Behind the Scenes on Set with A Celebrity Stylist

I was recently back on set, this time with one of my favorite celebrity hair stylists, Mark Townsend for Dove®.  He's been busy working with some of Hollywood’s leading ladies, so when I have a chance to sit in his chair, I take it!  This time, we partnered to show you how to get some extra sass in your hair style.  I can't wait to show you the video, but for now, here are some behind the scenes pics.

PS: While on set,  I completely fell in love with the Dove® Style + Care Nourishing Amplifier Mousse.  As Mark says, "It's essential for a good blow out!"

Awards Season Beauty Predictions by Celeb Glam Squads

It's no secret that red carpet season is my favorite season and it kicks off this Sunday with the Golden Globes hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler!  Are you ready?  I'll be speaking to the actors and actresses hair stylists, makeup artists and manicurists as soon as they send their talent off to the red carpet, but for now, L'Oreal's dream team gave me the 411 on their beauty predictions. Makeup

“The red carpet is no place for natural – it’s a place to make a statement. I expect to see a return to full, unapologetic glamour. I predict lots of rich black liquid eyeliner and classic matte red mouths. Think Sophia Loren," states Billy B., L'Oreal Paris Consulting Makeup Artist.

Hair

“I predict this season we’ll see throwbacks to classic Hollywood with polished waves that move. We can also expect to see looks that are more architectural, such as bold, blunt fringe and hair that’s super sleek.  As for updos, I think we’ll be seeing an element of texture incorporated into styles – like braids and twist for a bit of visual interest," explains Johnny Lavoy.

Nails

“Nail art is huge right now and texture/dimension is going to be everywhere in 2013 – including the red carpet. As for the shades I predict we’ll see a lot of, red (from burnt winter red to deep, rich bordeaux) is always a red carpet favorite – it’s classic but timeless. Plan on also seeing bright trend tones on the young and fashion-forward ladies who want to show a bit of personality," remarks Tom Bachik.

How to Rock Beachy Waves in the Fall, Nicole Kidman Style

What's easier than sporting beachy waves all summer long?  Nothing.  According to celebrity stylist, Oribe, the undone style can be worn well into the wintertime and he proved it by styling Nicole Kidman for the September issue of V magazine.  Have you ever seen her like this?  Hot.  Here's how to turn your tousled, care free hair up a few notches into polished, sex kitten waves.

  1. Apply a light weight gel to 2-inch sections of wet hair and use your fingers to style creating waves and texture.
  2. Diffuse it or let it air dry.
  3. Spritz a beach spray like Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray from mid shaft to the ends for shine and separation.
  4. Smooth a light weight serum through for added control.
  5. Curl two inch sections with an iron in random places for added drama.

Celebrity Stylists Jen Atkin Dishes the Secret to Beautiful Hair

Celebrity Stylist, Jen Atkin has her hands in everyone's hair in Hollywood working with  leading ladies and men including George ClooneyPenelope Cruz, Emma Stone, Sofia Vergara, Jessica Alba and Nicole Richie to name a few.  Atkin dishes about working with Sofia Vergara for the Met Gala and her number one tip for strong, beautiful hair, which is why she's now the spokesperson for Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy.

What do you like better, working with the women or the men?

The one thing I've noticed is all of my clients, regardless of who they are, want to feel confident and beautiful. I feel really lucky being able to do what I do and collaborate with them, try different looks, and recommend the right products, to help bring out their own style.

Do you like that being a stylist has given you the opportunity to work with both women and men?

Whether a man or a woman, my clients get all of my attention.  It's a lot of fun working with both men and women.  The whole process of getting to know people, listening to them, and finding a mutual vision for what they want their hair style to be is always exciting and rewarding.

Who have you worked with lately and what did you do?

I had the opportunity of working with Sofia Vergara for the 2012 MET Ball. She is a great client and friend of mine, so we always have a fun time working together. I thought she looked stunning in her Marchesa dress.

What's the number one request you receive from your female clients?  How do you achieve it?

Women want to look and feel confident, and hair is a big part of that. Whatever look they’re going for, my clients all want strong, beautiful hair.  And to get them there, I tell my clients start at the source: the roots. I love the Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy line of shampoos and conditioners because it gently cleanses & nourishes the scalp and hair, creating the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. This makes styling a lot easier!

Hottest Male Celeb Hair Styles of 2011 & How to Get Him to Rock One

Let's be honest, you can totally fall in lust with a guy because of his hair and 2011 has been filled with sexy A-list coifs.  I picked out the top six (Yes, six, I wanted to do five, but couldn't leave out one of these crops.) male cuts and styles and spoke with Celebrity Stylist for Paul Mitchell, Diana Schmidtke to find out how you can help your man can accomplish the look that makes your heart race. Most women would bring a photo of a celeb to their stylist to demonstrate the look they're trying to accomplish and Schmidtke recommends men do the same. However, knowing Joe and most men, they would never bring a photo to their barber.  Could you imagine?  That's where you come in.

Use this a guide and help him style sans the embarrassment.  Schmidtke warns, "It’s important to note that a lot of cuts and styles are dependent on hair type so help him work with his stylist to get a variation of the look if your his type isn’t ideal."

Chace Crawford's medium length, shaggy cut works best with wavy or straight textures.  His front fringe is longer so he can sweep it over his eye creating a sexy, messy look. Mesmerizing!  Key product: A high-shine pomade for separation.

Robert Pattinson has a longer cut that gets tight in the back.  While he doesn't need much product, he does use a blow-dryer and round brush every once in a while for some added bounce.  No matter how much this hair cut makes you swoon, unless your man loves spending time in the bathroom getting ready, it's probably not for him.

Justin Bieber has longer layers in the front that gradually evolve into uniform layers that spike towards the back.  Key product: A paste to add texture and help separate the pieces in the front like Redken Mint Shape Forming Paste.

Ryan Reynolds has the most classic cut of all.  A bit spikey, tight at the nape and clean with longer layers at the top to give the appearance of movement.  Key product: a matte paste to add texture like AXE Hold & Touch.

George Clooney asks for a sheer, over-comb, short crop cut.  I'm not sure if it's the cut or the salt and pepper hair that gets me, but it's working.  I'm also a huge fan of the groomed scruff.  Key product: a moisturizing paste that makes hair appear thicker like Paul Mitchell Mitch Construction Paste.

Matthew McConaughey has long layers with naturally wavy hair.  The layers make the waves work well.  It's the hair even us girls wish we had!  Key product: a gel without sticky hold like Paul Mitchell Mitch Steady Grip.

Get the Look: Selena Gomez's AMA Hair Style in 5 Simple Steps

Selena Gomez's whole look was by far my favorite at the American Music Awards on Sunday night.  She showed off her curves in a low-cut, satin Armani gown, wore a pop of peach on her lips and glamourized her eyes with tons of mascara and silver eyeshadow.  Her hair however, was a show stopper.  Tresemme Celebrity Stylist, John D., was behind the look and filled me in on how to get it in five simple steps. How-to:

1. Towel dry clean hair and comb Tresemme 24 Hour Body Mousse through your strands for even distribution.

2. Create a deep side part over the arch of your brow and blow dry smooth with a round brush.

3. Take the front sections of your hair on both sides and curl them in one inch sections using a one inch barrel.

4. Curl the bangs away from your face and continue curling the rest of your hair horizontally.

5. After curls cool, spritz a boar bristle brush with a finishing spray and brush the curls gently until they fall into a nice wave pattern.

Get Katy Perry’s 2010 American Music Awards Waves

Last night at the AMA’s it seems all eyes were on Taylor Swift’s sleek new ‘do, however I couldn’t help but envy Katy Perry’s red carpet locks.  She went from posing pretty in a textured Badgley Mischka dress to performing like her pop star self in a risqué red body suit and her hair worked with both personalities. “Classic Hollywood with a contemporary twist,” is how her stylist Danilo describes her look.  He also gave me the scoop on how to get it. Check it out:

Start by spritzing towel-dried hair in sections with a light-weight root lifter like Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Root Lifter Spray Gel.  Then, blow dry your strands in sections lifting straight up from the root and letting it fall using a large barrel brush.

Once dry, use a medium sized curling iron to create spiral curls all around your head and pin them up until they cool.  To achieve the wavy look as opposed to a spiral pattern, brush the curls out until the waves reveal themselves towards the bottom.  Whatever you do, don’t tousle.  Finish the look with a touchable hairspray like L’Oreal Elenett.

Whether you want to embrace your inner rock star or just try something new with a curling iron, as Mrs. Brand proved this look works on anyone.

Sexy Spring Style: Side Swept Braid

As seen on the Spring/Summer 2010 runways and on some of the hottest celebs, the side swept braid is a simple, yet chic style to sport this spring.  Celeb stylist, Amoy Pitters (who's styled A-lister's like Rihanna), created this look for the runways and gave me the scoop on how to replicate at home.

To create texture apply a volumizing mousse from your roots to the ends.  Blow dry your hair, then use a 1-2" curling iron and create loose waves throughout the crown.  Next, using a comb, sweep the hair to one side and create a braid.  Allow fly-aways for a soft, bohemian-chic look.  Finish with a light holding spray.

This look is perfect for a summer bar-b-que, happy hour or even a date.

Red Carpet Hair Secret

There's a new winner in Hollywood and it's not an actor or actress... it's a volumizer from Liqwd.  It may not have taken home any Golden Globes, Oscars or Grammys itself, but the starlettes who have been swearing by have looked flawless on the red carpets and if they won, they probably would have thanked Liqwd in their speeches. Cameron Diaz and Vera Farmiga's stylists both used the Liqwd Volumizer Catalyst on the nominees before the Oscars last week.  "It's the greatest product for fine hair," stated Lona Vigi, Diaz's stylist.  It really helps lift the roots for a great blow out or volumized updo.

The technology behind the volumizing tactics in this product is super advanced.  Unlike other products that leave build up on each strand to make them appear fuller and thicker, this volumizer infuses your hair with moisture that makes each individual strand swell and separate.

You can purchase Liqwd Volumizer Catalyst, $28, here.
