Carthusia Perfumery in Capri, Italy

carthusia-capri5.jpgWhen exploring the Amalfi Coast last week, I kept seeing bath and body products made by Carthusia, a perfumery in Capri.  Then, when Joe and I got to Capri, our hotel, Capri Tiberio Palace, supplied their products in the bathroom and had fragrance diffusers throughout the lobby, which were incredibly luxurious.  So of course, I had to pop into the original store and learn more one sniff at a time.

In 1948, a chemist from Torino, created the smallest fragrance laboratory in the world in Capri, Carthusia.  Each scent created is inspired by the island, which is why it's so special and why I found it so intriguing.  Capri is currently my favorite place in the world! The essence from rosemary picked on Monte Solaro is used in men's products, while the that of Capri wild carnation is used in women's fragrances. However, the line expands way beyond eau de toilettes.

Carthusia-Capri.jpg cathusia-capri2.jpgI wasn't allowed to take pictures, but obviously snapped a few anyway.  The Capri Tiberio Palace even had pool side refreshing water spritzers that were lightly fragranced by Carthusia (first photo).  That, my friends, was the icing on the cake. The essence of Capri and all of it's energy was in full force.

Don't worry, I'm not raving to you about something you don't have access to unless you visit Capri!  You can check out the Carthusia line online and make purchases.  My favorite things are actually the home diffusers and candles.  Who wouldn't want their home to smell like Capri?

Dinner with Laura Slatkin of Nest Fragrances

Chances are you own a candle created by Laura Slatkin.  Her first collection sold in Bath & Body Works (yes, the ones that matched the fragrance collections) and now, naturally, she's onto bigger and better things.  Her latest venture, Nest Fragrances, includes candles, but the scents are the stars.  Over dinner in her house on the Upper East Side in NYC, we spoke about her favorites, career and scent inspiration and what's next. When asked at dinner what your favorite NEST fragrance was, you had one for all different occasions!  What are they and why can't you name just one?

People always ask me which one of my fragrances is my favorite. As you can imagine, it is like asking a mother which child do they favor more!  I worked so hard on all of these fragrances.  I labored over them, lived with them, shaped them, and tweaked them until they were perfection, in my opinion, so it is very hard to choose a “favorite”! Instead of spending all my time with one fragrance, I divide my time evenly between them all so no one ever feels excluded! I wear Passiflora during the day as it lifts my spirits. Passiflora reminds me of the superb fragrance that emanates from a floral shop filled with fresh flowers and green leaves; I wear my refreshing Amazon Lily on the weekends when I am riding my bike in East Hampton or shopping around town in NYC; I wear Dahlia & Vines when I am out for dinner in the evening with my husband and close friends; I wear White Sandalwood when I am in a more seductive mood and headed for a special evening out; I wear Midnight Fleur when I am dressed in an evening gown. I lather my entire body with Midnight Fleur body cream and combine it with the eau de parfum. I wear Midnight Fleur when I want a rich, sexy, evocative fragrance on my skin.

The NEST Fine Fragrance Collection screams luxury from the packaging to the base notes.  What was your inspiration?

I didn't wake up one morning and decide to launch a fine fragrance collection; I was inspired to create a fine fragrance collection. One day I was sitting in my library reading some art books, flipping through the pages of a book on the 18th C. British artist Mrs. Delany when I came across a botanical that was so beautiful I actually ripped it out of the book – something one should never do – and I wrapped it around a box and said to myself, “Wow, this would make an amazingly beautiful fine fragrance collection.” It is then that I began the journey of marrying fine art to the art of perfumery. I brought the two worlds together and it was perfect. I hired a very talented Russian artist to paint the botanicals using Mrs. Delany’s body of work as inspiration. Then I took the paintings to the perfumers, and we created the fragrances using the artwork as inspiration.

From your career on Wall Street to founding Slatkin & Co, you're such an inspiring business woman.  What's one piece of business advice you'd give to others?

There are so many lessons I have learned along the way. I guess if I had to choose one lesson I have learned over the years is that businesses are like rivers – you need to let them flow. If you come across a barrier, you need to let the water go around that barrier, over that barrier, find a new direction to go in, but you can’t expect that it is always going to flow perfectly in the way you envisioned. If something isn’t working you need to find a new path, you need to switch gears, learn to pull the plug, and remember it isn’t personal, it is business. Building a business is a roller coaster, it is ride, and you should have fun on that ride. When things hit bottom, just remember you can only go up from there. The way to swing back up is to regroup and get to work…work harder. Stay positive and never lose your positive spirit. You have to find that inner strength to march onward and upward.

What's the best piece of advice anyone's ever given you?

When my son was diagnosed with severe autism, my husband and I started a foundation: New York Collaborates for Autism. Our first task was to establish a school for children with autism in NYC. I met Hillary Clinton at a friend’s home, and I shared with her our foundation’s mission. She listened carefully and she said to me, “I am going to give you some very important advice and I want you to remember what I am going to tell you.” She leaned in and said, "The government is your most powerful partner.” I quickly discovered that she couldn’t be more correct. The fastest way to affect change, to scale your efforts, and disseminate information, is through public/private partnerships. Her advice has been our guiding light. We went on to found the first charter school for children with autism in the state of New York. Hillary Clinton wrote a letter to the State of New York on our behalf, supporting and recommending the approval of our charter.

When you have an entrepreneurial spirit, it seems the sky's the limit.  What's next for you?  Or what else do you hope to accomplish one day?

“There is still much to accomplish with NEST Fragrances. It is a terrific company enjoying tremendous growth so I am laser-focused on continuing to drive that growth for the foreseeable future. I suppose one day I will sell NEST Fragrances and retire on a beach somewhere. Yes, I would retire to an island somewhere and you would find me on a beach on a lounge chair, drinking a pina colada; that is my “next.” Of course, as my husband always says, “And then you would open a puka bead shop on the beach and then, before you know it, there would be many, many puka bead shops." But seriously, my dream would be to start another company with several of my closest colleagues. We would dream up an innovative idea—a company based on a single product. Nothing complicated but ingenious! We would own the company together and have a lot of fun. Building businesses is fun; there will always be a next!”

Narciso Rodriguez Talks Ten Years of 'for her'

When it comes to scent, very few are actually iconic as the industry is over saturated and new brands come and go.  However, one scent has proved itself over and over again throughout the past decade gaining a cult following thanks to it's unconventional masculine oriented note of musk.  The fragrance?  Narciso Rodriguez For Her.  To celebrate the 10th anniversary, I spoke with the fashion designer and perfumer himself about the the beginning, his muses and the future. Congratulations on the 10 year anniversary of "For Her!" If you were to launch the fragrance now, would you change anything?

Thank you very much! I would not do anything that’s fundamentally different.  I love the scent as much now as I did more than ten years ago. In terms of fragrance, the things that inspired me while we were developing ‘for her’ are essentially the things that inspire me today – grace, sensuality and femininity. Egyptian musc would still be the central component - I’m sure of that.

Why do you think "For Her" has such a cult following?

‘for her’, for all its ingenuity, also has a certain universality that allows a woman to discover some aspect of herself within the fragrance – something that reflects her own personality. That sort of connection is rare and it can be addictive.

When creating the fragrance, what or who was your inspiration? Was there a particular woman in mind?

Inspiration comes in many forms. For me, while there were definitely women in my life who in one way or another informed my vision of femininity, a vision that ultimately led to ‘for her’, many other aspects played a role as well. Experiences, memories, etc, all influence the creative process.  To answer your question, ‘for her’ had many muses.

Is there a celebrity or public figure that you think best represents the "For Her" woman today?

I’ve been very lucky in the past 10 years to meet so many women who love ‘for her’. The ‘for her’ woman isn’t necessarily best represented by someone in the public eye. It’s just as likely that she is an extremely private person who, when she wears ‘for her’ feels iconic, but who keeps that moment of pleasure for herself.

What's next?  Do you see yourself creating another fragrance in the future or possibly dipping into cosmetics?

Fragrance is a key part of a woman’s wardrobe, and I enjoy the development process, so it’s something I’ll keep working at alongside the Ready To Wear collections for the foreseeable future. So yes, there will certainly be more to look for from us in the fragrance arena. As far as cosmetics are concerned, I love color and I love to experiment with it across many platforms, so while I can’t promise anything in the near term – you never know what the future holds.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, Narciso Rodriguez created a ‘for her’ Musc Oil that can be found at Nordstrom.

Eat, Pray, Sniff... Exploring the Laura Tonatto Profumi in Rome, Italy

Ciao from Rome!  Our first day here, of course ventured around from Piazza to Piazza admiring scenes like the Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps and stopping for liters of wine along the way.  In the Piazza Di Pietra I found myself separated from my family. As they were sipping espresso, I testing my way through the Laura Tonatto Profumi, a boutique owned by Laura Tonatto herself, who created Queen Elizabeth II's signature scent.  Allow me to take you there...

Experiencing each note offered one at a time through an interactive wall by spritzing some of the already blended fragrances and single notes I felt at home. Albi was one of my favorites as it struck a cord with it's spicy note of black pepper blended with fresh lavender.

The store manager was excited to tell me that a scent blended by George Clooney is a big seller and of course I was in awe to find out that Laura Tonatto is also the nose behind some of the Kerastase and L'Oreal Professional fragrances.

As I ventured to the back of the store, I found TVs with headphones attached set up like a museum tour that walked through decades of famous concoctions.  The experience was a beauty-junkie's travel must-do.  You can visit the Laura Tonatto Profumi online boutique to custom blend your fragrance.  After all, you don't want any else having your scent.  Do you?

3 Hot Luxury Items for Less: Diamonds, Gold & The Most Expensive Perfume in the World

When it comes to shopping for clothes and home goods, I'm a Maxxinista, but there's nothing like scoring a gorgeous pair of Louboutins or an ornate Alexis Bittar cocktail ring at sample sales.  There's something to be said about luxury.  We all want it, but have to be strategic in the ways we obtain it.  Retailers are now finding ways to bring their luxe items to the masses and I, for one, couldn't be happier.  Here are some covetable beauty buys that you may rethink purchasing. Perfume

Deemed the most expensive perfume in the world, Clive Christian No. 1 will have you smelling close to a million dollars.  The original retails for $865, but it's made with the rarest ingredients, of course.  This fall, V Perfumes was launched for half the price at $405.  Not bad considering.  The scent contains notes of honey and sandalwood on top of jasmine, orange blossom, rose and chamomile.

Manicure

How much would you actually spend on your nails?  When it comes to nail art some go to extremes.  Take Kelly Osbourne for example.  At this year's Emmy's she flaunted a $250K black diamond manicure by the jeweler, Azature.  The most expensive nail polish in the world has 267 carats of diamonds in it.  What happened to the diamonds when she took the polish off?  Crazy!  The company created a bottle of the sparkle for only $25 so you can DIY.

Gold Accents

This fall, ornate gold accents are in.  Whether it be in head pieces, makeup or jewelry.  A Dior cuff would run you about $500, but the brand just came out with these Golden Tattoos made out of 24K gold leafing.  From charms and rings to cuffs, the delicate tattoo jewelry is a true form of luxe for less, but less meaning $120.  Would you spend that much on a tattoo just to have something Dior?

First Look at Pure DKNY A Drop of Rose

When my doorman hands me all of my packages at the end of the day and one of them happens to be from DKNY, I can't contain my excitement and peek inside before even getting upstairs into my apartment.  This time, it was a bottle of Pure DKNY A Drop of Rose.  I found out it was coming out about two months ago during a meeting with the brand and have been eagerly awaiting it's arrival since the origional Pure DKNY is one of my daily go-tos.  With it, came the note above, pretty spesh! I'm very picky about fragrances I actually wear.  Similar to Pure DKNY a Drop of Vanilla, this is a light daytime fragrance.  It's delicate and romantic, not your grandmother's rose.  The roses are harvested each summer in the Anatolian flower fields of the Isparta valley of Turkey.  The process is strict as the flowers are handpicked right before dawn and about 2,500 tons of petals are brought by truck to a distillery.  The fragrance ends up being the purest form of rose. DKNY is known for helping to improve the lives of women through creating and selling their Pure fragrances and this one is no different.  They have a partnership with CARE, which helps  lift women out of global poverty.

Exclusive Interview: Reem Acra and I Talk Fragrance Addiction Backstage

When I was invited backstage to the Reem Acra show this season it wasn't to cover the beauty look.  Instead, it was to speak with Ms. Acra prior to the show about her first fragrance launching this October called Reem Acra Eau de Parfum.  Yes!  This I'll cover!  Something fresh!  Excited, I headed backstage and had a one-on-one chat before the scene got hectic with the designer about why her new fragrance gives power to women. "It's about giving power to woman," Ms. Acra remarks.  "This scent creates a sense of addiction."

With the essence of the fragrance being amber, notes of orange blossom, pear, and bergamot open it, followed by ginger and florals such as jasmine, lily of the valley and peony.  It's dried down by amber, patchouli and musk.

"This is not just a fragrance," she states.  "It's part of my lifestyle, because I grew up collecting amber and regularly drink orange blossom so it's very true to who I am."

Ms. Acra went on to explain that as a child in Lebanon she and her father would dig and pick amber from the ground, which is now part of a collection is at the Museum of Natural History in NYC.

Since I'm super picky about my fragrances and normally don't share what I'm wearing, I asked Ms. Acra how she felt about keeping fragrance a secret.  Her response, "I usually tell people what I wear.  By sharing, we're empowering women.  It's a powerful secret to pass on from women to women and the more powerful women we have around us the more power we'll have in the world."

*Reem Acra Eau de Parfum will be available exclusively at Saks in October.

Lady Gaga Fame is Here and I Got A Sneak Peek!

I've already expressed my excitement over Gaga's new fragrance and am happy to announce that it's arrived!  Receiving the samples felt very surreal as a sleek black bag arrived at my apartment with two samples of the black liquid awaiting my approval.  I don't normally get like this about celebrity fragrances as I can't stand the whole concept to be honest, but I think Gaga did it right.  Fame is Lady Gaga. It's the first black perfume, but don't worry once you spritz it, it becomes clear once in contact with the air.  Gaga was quoted saying, "It smells like an expensive hooker," and despite the rumors of her blood being in the fragrance, it is very much a piece of her.

I showed the video directed by Steven Klein behind the fragrance two weeks ago, which is very sensual.  Her fragrance is as well topped off with notes of honey, saffron and apricot nectar, followed by tiger orchid and jasmine.  It's labeled as a fruity floral, but one I'd wear at nighttime.  Overall it's innovative and impressive.

Nine West Launches Their First Fragrance, Love Fury

As you may notice, I have a Nine West widget floating on my site and ladies, it's for a really good reason!  The brand launched their first ever fragrance, Love Fury, that's designed with a stiletto heel stopper.  They also made a chic pair of Love Fury heels to compliment the fragrance. "Love Fury is for the woman who loves the privileges of being a woman—from wearing high-heeled pumps to using fragrance’s power to seduce," Jean Madar, chairman and CEO of Nine West's fragrance manufacturing partner Inter Parfums Inc., commented to WWD.

The scent is delicate, so I like it.  It's a fresh, yet seductive blend of florals such as rosebud, mimosa petals, and mandarin layered with jasmine and rounded out by musk and amber.  It's something I'd spritz on during the day without hesitation.  The limited-edition pumps are pin-up sexy – satin, 4 1/2 inch stiletto with a 3/4" platform.  I have them and I love them.

The fragrance retails for $55 and pumps are $89.

My Scent Secrets Revealed

I used to never tell people what fragrance I wore.  I loved that my scent was my secret.  However, after being in the beauty industry for almost 6 years, spritzing everything I got my hands on, I've finally found my two perfect fragrances and have to share!  This is quite the accomplishment!  So here's my secret – Tocca eau de parfum Florence for day and Maison Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire for night.

Tocca eau de parfum Florence is light enough for daytime and smells like fresh roses.  Every time I spritz it I think of walking around a rose garden in perfect Spring weather.  Talk about a great escape.  With notes of Italian Bergamot, Grapefruit Leaves, Green Pear, Apple Cocktail, Ivory Gardenia, Crushed Violet Petals, Jasmine, Tuberose, Blue Iris, Blonde Wood and White Musk this sent is heavenly.

Before going out at night on a date with Joe I usually spritz my Maison Francis Kurkdjian Lumiere Noire.  It's a sexy, mysterious scent that's a little on the strong side, so just a bit will do.  Notes include spiced rose, patchouli and narcissus.
