As a New Yorker who's experimented with juice and raw food cleanses (RIP Organic Avenue) as well as elimination diets (bye, bye dairy), it's safe to say that I've tried it all.  With the goals of flushing toxins, clearing my skin and dropping a few pounds, throughout the years I've succeeded, I've failed and I've starved.  The cycle is a vicious one, but always provided hope.  The main problem I find when it comes to 'cleanses' or 'detoxes' is that there's no real plan for how to maintain the effects.  A five day juice cleanse means nothing if you go back to eating the way you were immediately after.  Plus, most cleanses actually deprive your body of the nutrients it needs to properly "detox".
